Today is the day of the “peaceful transition of power,” as President Barack Obama hands over the presidency to Donald Trump. We figured you may need a drink, so certified bartender and mixologist Zachary Johnson has concocted you the best drinks – they’re tremendous – featuring some of our favorite DC distilleries – One Eight Distillery and Green Hat (and as an added bonus, Green Hat will be donating all in house cocktail sales to Planned Parenthood on January 21st).
“I’M WITH HER” OLD FASHIONED
- 2 1/4oz. ‘One Eight Distilling’ Bourbon
- 1/4 oz. (Orange) Simple Syrup
- 1/4 oz. Amaretto Liquor
- 2-3 dashes ‘One Eight Distilling’ Orange Bitters
Originally concocted for my friend’s biennial election night party for the most recent election, it originally featured brandy for the base spirit in a nod to a Wisconsin-style Old Fashion, but I found the drink also worked particularly well with one of the experimental Tennessee Whiskeys that had been aged in a coffee-bean infused barrel. Prepared the ingredients in a separate mixing glass with ice (as well as a fat orange twist if you’re not using orange-infused simple syrup). Stir gently for 15 seconds, and strain into a rocks glass with a single large ice cube, adding a fresh orange twist and Luxardo Maraschino cherry.
GOLDEN TOWER
- 1 oz. Russian Vodka
- 3 oz. Fresh Orange Juice
- 3 oz. Sparkling Wine (Brut)
- 1/4-1/2 oz. Float Galliano
The other drink I designed for the election night party, representing the Republican candidate, finds its inspiration from two classic cocktails: the Mimosa and the Harvey Wallbanger. For this drink, you’ll build it in the Collins glass, and since traditionally, any cocktail with sparkling wine as an ingredient doesn’t have ice in it, you’ll want to make sure all the components, excepting the Galliano, are cold already.
FRENCH 75
- 1 oz. ‘Green Hat’ Gin
- 3/4 oz. Lemon Juice
- 3/4 oz. Simple Syrup
- 3 oz. Sparkling Wine (Brut)
- 2-3 dashes ‘One Eight Distilling’ Lavender Bitters
I’ve added this vintage cocktail to our Inauguration Day cocktail list because it’s an excellent showcase for the products of both distilleries I had the pleasure of visiting while I was in D.C. last year. I would go with Green Hat’s Classic Gin for this recipe, adding the lemon juice and simple syrup to your shaker cup over ice. Shake for 15 seconds, straining into a small wine glass or whiskey sour glass. Top up with the sparkling wine, and add the lavender bitters so that the flowery essential spirit blooms on the surface.
