New Year’s Eve in Chicago is always exciting, and this year, in addition to celebrations across the city, Chicago will also host a nationally televised countdown as part of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, adding a major free, open-to-the-public celebration to the mix for the first time.

Whether you’re planning an intimate night out, a full evening downtown, or a celebration from home, New Year’s Eve 2025 offers multiple ways to welcome 2026, from skyline-view parties at venues like Maple & Ash and Grill on 21, to free New Year’s Event experiences along the Riverwalk.

Chicago’s Countdown Meets the Party Scene

Chicago’s inclusion in Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest brings a new dimension to how the city celebrates New Year’s Eve, but it doesn’t replace the private parties, restaurant experiences, and curated events Chicagoans know and love.

Announced by Mayor Brandon Johnson alongside the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), Choose Chicago, ABC7 Chicago, and Dick Clark Productions, the broadcast marks the first-ever live Central Time zone midnight countdown in the show’s more than 50-year history.

Chicago native Chance the Rapper will host and headline the countdown performance, joined by Chicago-based DJs and performers throughout the evening, bringing local talent to a national audience.

What to Know If You’re Heading Downtown

The official city celebration takes place along the Chicago Riverwalk at Wacker Drive, between Wells Street and Lake Street, with the main stage located at Wacker and Franklin. The event opens to the public at 5:00 p.m., with performances beginning at 9:00 p.m. and the midnight countdown just before the new year.

From 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., a custom audio-visual projection by ART on THE MART will illuminate the riverfront. As midnight approaches, fireworks will launch from bridges along the Chicago River, with viewing available from Upper Wacker Drive and large screens positioned throughout the event footprint.

The event is free and open to the public, with no advance ticket registration required. Entry points are located at Wacker Drive and Wells Street, and Wacker Drive and Lake Street. Capacity limits will be enforced, and guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Security checkpoints, including metal detectors and bag checks, will be in place. Only bags sized 12” x 6” x 12” or smaller are permitted.

Because of street closures and crowd volume, public transportation is strongly recommended. Chicago Transit Authority trains and buses will be free from 10:00 p.m. on December 31 through 4:00 a.m. on January 1, making it easier to move between celebrations or head home safely.

Celebrating From Home or Mixing Plans

Not everyone plans to be out at midnight, and Chicago’s New Year’s Eve programming makes it easy to celebrate from home or split the night between multiple experiences.

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2026 airs live on ABC beginning at 7:00 p.m. CST, with Chicago segments featured throughout the broadcast. The program will also be available on Hulu the following day.

For a Chicago-only viewing experience, the city will livestream the celebration, including performances and fireworks, at chicago.gov, allowing viewers to tune in without navigating crowds or closures.
